Readers Question:
I need information about auto insurance in California. I just need to know the basics like what are the required auto insurance coverage in California or how can I save on my auto insurance, stuff like that. Thanks!
Betty

Bakersfield, CA
Hello Betty!

The state of California has financial responsibility laws. And in most cases, the residents of California (and thats including me) choose to have auto insurance to meet the required financial responsibility laws here.
According to Section 16451 of the Vehicle Code, the minimum required auto insurance in California includes:

$15,000 bodily injury liability for every person in every accident
$30,000 for all persons for every accident
$5,000 for property damage for every accident.
Now, to help you get a good deal for your auto insurance in California, you must be aware of the discounts that could help you get lower auto insurance rates
For one, the good driver discount. This type of discount is offered to drivers who have a license for three or more years, has never caused an accident, and has no more than one point on his or her driving records.

Another is the good student discount. Normally, auto insurance companies offer better auto insurance rates for students who are able to get an average of 2.0 or higher.

Lastly, low driving mileage discount. For auto insurance companies, drivers who use their vehicles less than often have lower chances of getting involved in accidents thus lower chances of filing for auto insurance claims. And thats why they offer a discount for that.
For more auto insurance discounts in your area, you can also ask your auto insurance agent.

SR22 California

Reader’s Question:

How do I file for an SR22 California Certificate? I really need to get my license reinstated for my job but I don’t know what to do!

Ronwald

Napa, CA

Good question. California, like most states that have enacted Financial responsibility laws, requires drivers who got their driving privileges suspended to file an SR22 form, which serves as proof that they carry enough financial capability (in the form of auto insurance coverage) to pay damages done to properties, as well as injuries inflicted upon individuals, for causing a car accident or collision. This form acts as assurance that those who exhibit risky driving behaviors, or has had a poor driving history, are obligated to carry insurance for everyone’s (drivers and pedestrians) mutual protection.

A proper SR22 California Certificate can only be filed by an authorized auto insurance provider. So the very first thing you need to do is find a suitable insurance carrier to do this for you. Once you find one and buy the appropriate levels of coverage, the carrier will then forward the SR22 form to notify your states Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) so that you an facilitate the process of getting your driving privileges back. You will then need to maintain continuous coverage for a period of two years and maintain a clean driving record.

Looking for providers to help you get SR22 insurance in California? We recommend using the free SR22 insurance search tool found on this website to get a listing of all carriers available in your area, as well as timely and accurate quote offers which you can use to compare for the best rates.

Reader’s Question:

My aunt will be moving in California with her family. She’s asking me to give some information about auto insurance stuff here. I don’t know a lot about car insurance so I need some little help here. What can you tell me about California vehicle insurance?

Jun

Glendale, CA

Hello there Jun! I do hope your aunt will enjoy staying here in California.

As to your question, the California vehicle insurance is pretty simple. Let me first tell you something about the Financial Responsibility Law here.

The state of California has a Financial Responsibility Law that requires every driver driving in California to financially responsible in an event that an accident occurred. This ensures everyone that if an accident happened, the person at fault is financially responsible to pay for the other party’s damages that resulted from said accident.
To meet the financial responsibility law you have four options:

  1. Get a California vehicle insurance coverage (which most people prefer);
  2. A $35,000 cash deposit to DMV;
  3. A self-insurance certificate issued by the CA DMV (if you have 25 vehicles or more);
  4. A surety bond amounting to $25,000 from a licensed auto insurance company in California

Also, the required minimum limits for California vehicle insurance are: $15,000 for injury or death/person; $30,000 bodily injury/accident; $5000 for damage on property/accident.

For more information about California auto insurance, feel free to check with the CA Department of Insurance.
